NGO Volunteer Experience
January 2018
Pujya Kasturbha Gandhi English Medium School (daily)
I volunteered daily for a month at a school for children from underprivileged families in Pune, India. I was working as a teacher's assistant for students from 7th to 10th grade. I assisted with administrative work, taught English & Maths, graded papers, and helped with any other work that had to be done. It really was a humbling experience to interact with the students, talk to them about their experiences, and help them with their school work.
August 2014 - March 2016
KCT Vidya Niketan School
While I was in 11th & 12th grade, I volunteered twice a week at an elementary school for children from underprivileged families. I helped the teachers with monitoring the classes, teaching students Reading and Maths, creating visual aids for classes, and helping with a school play production. Volunteering at this school and sitting with children aged 5-10, listening to them talk about their dreams and daily lives really was a thumbing and heartwarming experience. I also learned to be patient while having to manage a class of 25, 7-year-old children. I had to be creative in my approach to teaching them and I also had to be understanding of their background.
My volunteer experience at these NGO schools helped me become more empathetic towards the people around me and more observant of the way things are in the world. I also had to contribute in a lot of areas of the institution and so developed the skills of being an all-round team player who could contribute and step-up whenever needed. I believe that these skills and experiences have allowed me to grow into a better marketer who can understand people (potential consumers) and lend a hand wherever needed in an organization.
